Botanical Name: Trigonella foenum-graecum

Fenugreek is an annual herb belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae) and is native to the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and parts of Asia. The plant typically grows 1–2 feet tall, developing an upright, branching stem with a mildly aromatic presence.

Its leaves are trifoliate, composed of three oval to oblong leaflets with smooth edges and a soft green coloration. These leaflets are arranged alternately along slender, hollow stems. Fenugreek produces small, pale yellow to creamy-white flowers, each emerging singly or in small clusters from the leaf axils. The blossoms have a typical pea-like shape, characteristic of the Fabaceae family.

After flowering, the plant forms distinctive elongated, narrow seed pods, each measuring about 3–6 inches long. These pods contain multiple hard, angular, amber-colored seeds—the most commonly used part of the plant. The seeds have a strong, maple-like aroma and are rich in flavorful compounds.

Fenugreek has a deep taproot, allowing it to thrive in dry or well-drained soils, and it is cultivated widely across India, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean for both culinary and herbal uses.
