Botanical Name: Viburnum opulus

Cramp bark is derived from the bark of Viburnum opulus, a deciduous shrub native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia, and now naturalized in North America. The plant typically grows 8–15 feet tall, forming a rounded, spreading habit with multiple stems.

Viburnum opulus features opposite, three-lobed leaves with coarsely toothed edges and a bright green coloration that turns striking shades of red and purple in autumn. In late spring to early summer, the shrub produces flat-topped clusters of white flowers known as corymbs. These flower clusters often have a ring of showy sterile blooms surrounding smaller fertile ones at the center.

By late summer, the flowers mature into translucent red berries (drupes) that hang in clusters and persist into winter, providing visual interest and wildlife food. The bark, traditionally harvested from young branches, is smooth and gray brown on the exterior with a greenish layer beneath.
