Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica)
Lobelia is a genus of flowering plant comprising over 415 species. Because of its variety of colors and growth habit it is considered an ornamental as borders in gardens and landscaping. It can be an annual or perennial depending on zoned areas. Native Americans used Lobelia to treat respiratory problems, muscle disorders and as a purgative. The species used most commonly in herbalism is Lobelia inflata or aka Indian tobacco. But L siphilitica and L cardinalis were once considered to cure syphilis.
Because of its similarity to nicotine the internal use of lobelia maybe dangerous to susceptible populations including children and pregnant women excessive use will calls nausea and vomiting.
